Stafford Capital Partners’ Timber Portfolio sequesters 15.9 million tonnes of carbon in the last 12 months, releases 2023/24 Sustainability Report

London, 7 October 2024 - Stafford Capital Partners today launched its 2023/24 Sustainability Report, which captures the firms’ sustainability efforts over the last year. The report highlights that Stafford's timberland assets under management sequestered an aggregate 15.9 million tonnes of carbon over 2023/24, the rough equivalent to the annual emissions of the city of Rome.

With USD %%AuM%% under management and advice, Stafford over the last year has accelerated its efforts to place sustainability at the heart of everything it does.

Commenting on the new report, Stafford’s CEO Angus Whiteley said today that the finance industry needed to step up its efforts in in the race to Net Zero: “Capital is a fundamental part of the solution. The innovation and change required to reduce and reverse the effects of climate change and to mitigate the consequences, needs long term investment. It is through capital that we deploy that we can have the greatest impact. Alongside generating returns for our investors, we sequester carbon through the growth in our forests, we support the energy transition through our climate solutions investments, and we target the reduction of real-world emissions through proactive stewardship in our private equity portfolio.”

Stafford’s Head of Sustainability Marta Jankovic said that focusing on policy engagement and industry collaboration supports Stafford’s climate objectives: “We have been advocating for policies to support the climate transition, through calls directly to the UK Prime Minister and to the EU. We have been deepening our relationship with the PRI, and in 2024 expanded the industry bodies we collaborate with to include the ESG Data Convergence Initiative (EDCI) and the newly formed International Sustainable Forestry Coalition (ISFC).”

Highlights from the new report include;

  • The launch in 2024 of a bespoke private equity decarbonization programme for investors looking to reach their carbon targets.

  • Stafford’s infrastructure and private equity businesses’ both being awarded 5 Stars in their relevant PRI Assessment Modules in 2023.

  • A 25% increase in the number of PRI signatories in Stafford’s external manager landscape, as compared to 2021.

  • The firm’ s Carbon Offset Opportunities Strategy receiving a “Sustainability Leaders” award by The Australian Financial Review.

  • Joining and contributing to new global sustainability initiatives, including the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition (ISFC) and the ESG Data Convergence Initiative (EDCI)

Stafford has a long history of innovation and pioneering investment strategy, having been founded over 20 years ago with a deep commitment to sustainable investing. Stafford is an active member of the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative (NZAM) and was an early adopter of the PRI, becoming a signatory in 2010.

In 2022, Stafford published its progress towards Net-Zero targets for the first time, and appointed Marta Jankovic as the Head of Sustainability in 2023.

The report will be disseminated this week and is available on the Stafford Capital Partners website.
