Stafford Capital Partners publishes its third annual Sustainability Report
London, 18 October 2023 – Stafford Capital Partners (“Stafford”) has published its third annual Sustainability Report, summarising the firm’s impact on sustainability in 2022/2023. The report captures Stafford’s responsible investment framework and major milestones across timberland, infrastructure, private equity, and private credit, in the context of the environmental and social challenges faced in 2022.
As noted in the Foreword of the report, the most credible position on climate was spelled out on 20 March this year, when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report, sounding an alarm that we no longer expect to limit the rise in temperatures to 1.5°C above pre-industrial averages, but to overshoot and then reduce the temperature by removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. We are keeping the 1.5°C target alive, but only just.
2022 also saw Russia invade Ukraine, starting a destructive war that still continues today. It brings consequences that have impacted individuals the world over through accelerating inflation, with the cost of life’s fundamentals – energy and food – becoming unaffordable for many. This cost-of-living crisis has pushed millions into poverty and increased inequality across societies.
Despite these setbacks, the Sustainability Report notes that the reactions to the challenges have been encouraging. 2022 saw the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act into law in the US, demonstrating support for a decarbonising agenda in a way not previously seen. The European approach was to drive the renewable energy agenda harder and faster, a tactical response to the conflict but in recognition of the long-term need. There have been changes of government in various important jurisdictions, Australia and Brazil for example, bringing progressive climate policies with them.
Importantly, Stafford finds itself surrounded by investors, investment consultants, investment managers, trade associations, governments, NGOs and consumers who are committed to overcoming these most fundamental challenges.
Speaking about the launch of the report, Marta Jankovic, Head of Sustainability, Stafford Capital Partners said: “We are delighted to publish the third edition of Stafford’s Sustainability Report, which showcases our dedication to responsible investing and contributing to a more sustainable financial system. The report also highlights the collective challenges we face, and the urgent action needed.
Despite these challenges, we remain optimistic and excited about the future, and as you will read, Stafford will be working hard to ensure that we are doing all we can to make a difference. This is something we have been focused on since we were first founded in 2000.”
Stafford has a long history of innovation and pioneering investment strategy, having been founded over 20 years ago with a deeply embedded drive for sustainable investing. Today, Stafford has grown into a global team of more than 85 dedicated professionals, managing over USD 8 billion in assets across real assets and private markets sectors. Stafford is a signatory of the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative. In 2022, Stafford published its progress towards Net-Zero targets for the first time, and appointed Marta Jankovic as the Head of Sustainability in 2023.
